Soul Care - Stronger Character

by Mary Elsbury

We all have that one family member who is a little over the top. They tell crazy stories, dress differently from the mainstream, or have quirks that are memorable. When describing them, you call them “colorful” or “a real character.” It typically means they are unique.

Look at someone that I would consider a character – Paul. He persecuted and took delight in torturing believers but had a complete turnabout when confronted by Jesus; from spewing words of death and hatred to proclaiming Jesus as Lord.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that character matters. In Galatians 5, he points out that we all have a sinful nature, and these traits are seen in evidence today in the world: Road rage (anger) over not using a turn signal; wanting the latest pair of Air Jordans (jealousy); fighting in Congress (quarreling, dissension, selfish ambition, division). But we are given some wise words to “...let the Holy Spirit guide your lives…” and that “…the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

As a Christian, the fruit of the Spirit should set us apart. Our identity, purpose, and actions are grounded in Scripture, so we look and act a little differently than others around us. Our character is not built overnight; it is developed through a process involving experience, hard work, and learning from past mistakes. Stronger character comes from leaning on the Holy Spirit, cultivating those fruit, and allowing God to direct our path. This won’t happen without an all-out commitment. It’s a life-long race on a spiritual battlefield.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV

As I grow as a Christian, the more I hope to shed of my sinful nature and grow in grace and love. With age comes being unique, and I hope to be a character crafted by God.
